Agoda’s country director for Thailand and Indochina, Akaporn Rodkong, argues the repeat performance points to a structural shift in European travel habits.
“Thailand holding the top spots for a second year, with similar origin markets and three cities across the top five, points to something deeper than a seasonal spike,” Rodkong said. “European travellers have built Thailand into their annual routine. Having Bangkok, Koh Samui, and Pattaya all represented also shows the draw isn’t a single experience, it’s a country offering something different depending on what travellers are looking for.”
That spread matters for tourism planners. Bangkok delivers urban density, street food and shopping. Koh Samui offers beach resort appeal. Pattaya sits closer to Bangkok and competes on value and nightlife. Together they cover three distinct traveler profiles, which helps Thailand capture demand across multiple trip types rather than betting on a single draw.
Destination Ranking: Bangkok Leads, Bali Close Behind
Among individual cities, Bangkok held first place, with Bali in second. Koh Samui’s move up from fourth to third displaced Tokyo, which slipped to fourth, while Pattaya held the fifth spot. The country-level ranking — Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia — was unchanged from the prior year, suggesting the established pecking order among Asian destinations remains stable even as volumes shift.
The data also reveals where momentum is building fastest. India posted the strongest year-on-year growth in European accommodation searches at 14%, followed by South Korea at 13% and Vietnam at 12%. Those gains are smaller in absolute volume than Thailand’s lead, but they indicate European travelers are gradually widening the map beyond the traditional favorites.
