The video game preview easily eclipsed a new Robert De Niro thriller, The Whisper Man, which landed at No. 2 with 23.2 million views. This dynamic underscores a new reality for the entertainment industry: a highly anticipated video game trailer can now draw bigger audiences than A-list Hollywood releases on a premium movie platform.

Streaming Platforms Expand Beyond Movies and TV

For the past century, blockbuster films defined the entertainment industry. For the past 50 years, television shows drove daily engagement. But in the modern Netflix streaming landscape where audience engagement is king, those traditional formats are no longer enough to sustain a platform. Streaming may be the future of Hollywood, but for the companies that own these platforms, a lot of the buzz and focus is not necessarily on the cinematic blockbusters of the past. Companies are beginning to think much more broadly about what kinds of content people want to consume, and it does not look like the programming that came before.

When the GTA VI trailer debuted on Netflix in late August, it caused technical issues around the world as fans rushed to watch it the moment it went live. Streamers on Twitch and YouTube turned cameras on themselves to record their live reactions. The hype was undeniable, and the data backed it up. Data from Sensor Tower shows app downloads for the platform rose by 24 percent the day Netflix released the trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI.

Mobile Engagement Drives the Future of Streaming

Netflix is not alone in this strategic pivot. At Disney, a company that commands unparalleled consumer brand affection, the most surprising new bet is TikTok. In July, Disney unveiled a deal with the social video app that brings Disney assets to creators on the platform. It also brings curated fan TikTok content directly to Disney+. While Pixar, Marvel, FX, and ABC remain the heart of Disney’s streaming ambitions, the integration of short-form mobile video is designed to keep fan engagement flowing on phones, where consumers are less likely to watch a full feature or series.

Mobile engagement is a massive driver in this industry shift. Warner Bros. Discovery’s HBO Max and Peacock are also leaning heavily into mobile-first vertical video and formats. In fact, some of the buzziest content on Peacock lately is specifically made for mobile devices. This includes an AI-generated avatar of Andy Cohen that invites users into the Bravo-verse, alongside daily video games like Jeopardy! Today and Public Eye from Wolf Games, which is backed by procedural king Dick Wolf.

Video Game Content Becomes a Major Streaming Battleground

Games have become a major source of investment for media companies looking to diversify. Netflix has been exploring the gaming space for years, while Peacock has aggressively moved in this year. However, no streaming service is leaning into video game content quite like Amazon Prime Video. The tech giant folded games into its bundle in July, adding a dedicated games tab alongside movies, television, and live sports. This strategic move highlights how digital ecosystems are merging, turning traditional viewing destinations into multifaceted entertainment hubs.

Now, subscribers looking to play Hogwarts: Legacy or Indiana Jones and the Great Circle can do so directly within Prime Video. They won’t find these titles on HBO Max or Disney+, highlighting a distinct competitive advantage for Amazon in the entertainment platform wars. The move positions Prime Video not strictly as a streaming video service, but as a broader entertainment destination.

“What I see is this continued convergence between television, movies, and video games,” says Jeff Gattis, GM of gaming for Amazon. “You’re increasingly seeing these things come closer and closer together as entertainment lines blur.”

Amazon believes that thinking of Prime Video as an entertainment platform rather than strictly a streaming video platform is the key to capturing audience share. This reflects a shared industry belief that as the cutthroat battle for consumer time and cash heats up, entertainment platforms must explore ancillary opportunities outside their core competencies to survive.

What Happens Next

NBCUniversal is already taking this philosophy to heart by integrating community features, mobile engagement, and rethinking device modalities. “Increasingly we’re finding that people are watching our shows, and then they’re going on social media, they’re looking for community,” says Matt Strauss, chairman of NBCUniversal Media. “If you want to create the best experience, you have to go beyond the premium content and you have to start thinking differently about what’s the modality of the device that they’re using.”

Expect every major streaming service to aggressively pursue interactive content, vertical video, and playable titles over the next few years. The success of the GTA VI trailer on Netflix proved that audiences will show up in record numbers for video game content if it is made easily accessible on their preferred screens. As the lines between Hollywood and the gaming industry continue to blur, the definition of a streaming hit is changing rapidly. If a 26-minute video game trailer can become Netflix’s biggest premiere of the month, the door is open for entirely new entertainment formats to dominate the charts. For platforms fighting for survival, the future of engagement isn’t just what viewers watch, it is what they play.
