The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved bemotrizinol in June, marking the first new active sunscreen ingredient cleared for American consumers since the late 1990s. The chemical filter, widely used in Europe and Asia for over 25 years, promises superior UV protection and a more wearable formula.
Yale dermatologist Kathleen Suozzi notes that sunscreen chemistry in Europe is far ahead of the U.S. “In the U.S. we’ve been stuck with a fixed, approved list of ingredients from the FDA for decades,” she said. The FDA sunscreen approval breaks that stagnation, offering a powerful tool to combat sun-related skin damage. The newly approved filter offers a superior option for patients who struggle with the texture and reapplication of older formulas.
The Science Behind Bemotrizinol’s UV Protection
Bemotrizinol, also known as BEMT, stands out because it provides very broad coverage against both UVB and UVA rays. Existing chemical sunscreens require a mix of multiple chemicals to achieve similar broad-spectrum protection. Mineral screens like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide also offer good coverage but come with distinct cosmetic drawbacks. “Minerals tend to give skin that whitish-hue, and they can rub off,” Suozzi explained.
Beyond its broad spectrum, BEMT is highly photostable. It maintains its UV-blocking power without breaking down, reducing the need for frequent reapplication. It also boasts a high “skin-feel index” or cosmetic elegance, meaning it is less greasy and more transparent. This makes it easier to wear daily, which is critical because UV exposure drives most skin aging and cancer risks. “Almost every issue we see in skin aging is sun-related,” said Suozzi, who is also a skin cancer surgeon. “I am a skin cancer surgeon, but I’m also an aesthetic dermatologist, and there’s a big overlap between the two. Skin appearance and skin health are closely tied.”
Why FDA Sunscreen Approval Took Decades
The delay in bringing BEMT to the American market stems from how the government regulates these products. The FDA classifies sunscreens as over-the-counter drugs, requiring years of expensive and rigorous clinical safety trials. In contrast, the European Union regulates sunscreens as cosmetics, which lowers the regulatory hurdles for innovation.
Environmental concerns also pushed the FDA to act. Older chemical sunscreens containing oxybenzone are known to damage coral reefs, prompting states like Hawaii to ban them. This created a demand for reef-safe alternatives and gave the FDA more incentive to seriously evaluate compounds like bemotrizinol.
Safety data from Europe and Asia show BEMT has a very low potential for irritation. It is a large molecule designed to sit on top of the skin rather than absorbing into it. “The large particle size means less absorption into the bloodstream, which has recently been highlighted as a concern for other chemical sunscreens,” Suozzi noted.
Navigating Sunscreen Ingredient Myths and Risks
Consumers often feel overwhelmed by sunscreen formulations. Suozzi breaks them down into two categories: mineral and chemical. Minerals act as physical blockers that reflect UV rays off the skin. Chemical screens absorb UV rays at specific wavelengths based on their chemical structure and convert the energy into heat. Both mechanisms require proper application to work effectively.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a shot-glass size amount of sunscreen for the entire body and a half-teaspoon or quarter-size amount for the head and neck. People should reapply every two hours when outdoors. For those mostly indoors, a morning application of mineral sunscreen on the face remains sufficient until washed or rubbed off. “If you’re running, swimming, sweating — then yes, you need to reapply,” Suozzi advises. She recommends applying facial sunscreen year-round, every morning. New formulations containing BEMT may make it easier to build this into a daily routine.
While everyone is at risk from sun exposure, endogenous melanin plays a significant role in how skin ages. Brown and black skin ages less quickly than very light skin because the extra melanin is protective. However, lifetime UV exposure remains the primary risk factor for skin health across all demographics.
What Happens Next
Consumers can expect to see bemotrizinol surface in products on store shelves this summer. The FDA started signaling approval back in December, officially clearing the sunscreen ingredient in June. Dermatologists hope that the cosmetic elegance and broad UV protection of BEMT will increase patient compliance, as many people still fail to apply or reapply sunscreen correctly.
The introduction of BEMT may also spur further innovation in the U.S. market, potentially opening the door for other filters already used internationally. As consumers gain access to formulations that are easier to wear and less irritating, public health outcomes related to skin cancer and premature aging could improve. With over 25 years of safety data from international markets, dermatologists are confident in its efficacy. As product lines incorporating BEMT roll out, consumer education will be vital to ensure proper usage and maximize the public health benefits of this regulatory milestone.
