Arable farmer Peter Knight is currently harvesting about 2,000 acres (809 hectares) at Woolgars Farm in West Horsley. The problems started during the first heatwave in May. Spring barley, a key ingredient for making beer, was planted in March and has seen very little rain since.

The crops flower in early June, but the intense heat puts them under immediate stress, impacting the final yield. Knight notes there was no rain throughout the entire grain-filling period. He is deeply concerned because three out of the last five years have featured similar drought-like conditions. “Trying to manage our way through that is very difficult,” Knight said. Irrigation is not a feasible option for arable farmers due to the massive scale involved; watering thousands of acres of grain is logistically and economically impossible.

To adapt, Knight is sowing earlier in the spring and performing less cultivation to help preserve soil moisture. Despite these best efforts, crop yields are reduced by around 30 to 40 percent compared to a normal year. The compounding effect of repeated hot years is making traditional farming methods obsolete.
