The rise of new export powerhouses has further strengthened global crop inventories. Brazil has transformed into the world’s largest soybean supplier, with exports surging more than 13-fold since 1997. Russia’s wheat shipments exploded to 48 million tons last year, up from roughly 1 million tons in the late 1990s.

This diversified supply chain is augmented by artificial intelligence. Farmers are flocking to AI-powered platforms that synthesize weather forecasts, soil data, and crop information to dictate precise planting and irrigation schedules. “Governments have much better information than in the past and are able to prepare earlier,” FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero told Reuters. “Our forecasting and market transparency have improved.”

In key crop producer India, monsoon rains remain deficient, but sowing has kept broadly on track after overcoming a substantial initial lag. Ashwini Bansod, vice president for commodities research at Phillip Capital India in Mumbai, noted that August and September rains will be crucial for maturity and grain formation. In South and Southeast Asia, the deployment of short-duration rice varieties is helping farmers cope with erratic monsoon patterns and secure future rice exports.

What Happens Next

The true test arrives in the fourth quarter. Meteorologists warn that the El Nino weather phenomenon, which warms Pacific Ocean surface temperatures and brings dryness to Asia, is still gathering force.

“Expectations are that it will be one of the strongest on record, or the strongest the world has ever seen, and that means the big impact of dryness has yet to come,” said Chris Hyde, a U.S.-based meteorologist at satellite data firm SkyFi.

While the agricultural landscape is sturdier, geopolitical fractures threaten to undermine this resilience. The ongoing Iran war and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz have triggered a global fertilizer shortage by disrupting crude oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. A prolonged fertilizer shortage could cripple future yields if the crisis deepens. “Much will depend on how conditions evolve during the second half of 2026, particularly given the reduced use of agricultural inputs caused by the Strait of Hormuz crisis and higher fertiliser prices,” Torero cautioned. The world may have enough grain stored away, but keeping the pipeline full requires peace and stable inputs.
