A rolling market survey conducted by the GNTO polled 7,896 travelers aged 18 to 64 across 10 European nations. The findings position Greece as the third most popular Mediterranean destination, with 29% of respondents indicating travel plans to the Hellenic Republic within the next two years.
Repeat Visitors Anchor Mediterranean Destination Growth
Loyalty plays a critical role in the ongoing boom. Of those planning a trip to Greece, 58% have already visited the country at least once, while 42% intend to explore it for the first time. This high rate of return visitors underscores the country’s ability to deliver consistent travel experiences that compel people to come back.
Interest varies significantly by market. Romanian travelers showed the highest intent at 45%, followed by Italians at 38% and Swedes at 37%. The strong interest from Eastern European markets aligns with expanded regional flight networks and rising disposable incomes, while steady demand from traditional Western European markets sustains baseline arrivals.
Shoulder Season Travel Reshapes 2026 Demand
Travel patterns are also shifting away from the traditional July-August peak. For 2026, 35% of surveyed travelers considering a trip to Greece are looking at the September to November window. September emerged as the single most preferred month, selected by 23% of potential visitors.
This pivot toward shoulder season travel reflects broader European trends. Travelers increasingly seek to avoid extreme summer heat, high accommodation prices, and overcrowded hotspots. Extending the tourist season provides a dual benefit: visitors enjoy milder weather and better value, while local businesses generate revenue outside the narrow summer window.
Infrastructure And Safety Score High Among Travelers
The GNTO survey also evaluated what drives European travelers to choose Greece over competing destinations. Variety of experiences ranked as the strongest attribute, cited by 83% of respondents. This variety spans from island-hopping in the Cyclades to culinary tours in the Peloponnese and historical exploration in Athens. The friendliness and hospitality of locals followed closely at 82%, while safety ranked at 77%. Tourist infrastructure earned a 75% approval rating, and the quality-to-price ratio stood at 67%.
These high marks arrive as Greece experiences a massive surge in actual arrivals. The European Travel Commission’s recent trends and prospects quarterly report found Greece leading the region in early 2026 visitor numbers, recording a 38.3% increase compared to previous figures. This outpaced other Mediterranean favorites, with Italy recording a 21.1% increase and Malta seeing 16% growth. Such rapid growth tests the very infrastructure that travelers praise, making sustained investment critical.
“The initial findings of the survey confirm that Greece maintains a strong position in the travel intentions of Europeans, gaining both the trust of those who have already visited it and the interest of new audiences,” said Andreas Fiorentinos, secretary general of the GNTO. He noted that the data will allow the organization to tailor its promotional strategy to the specific dynamics of individual markets.
What Happens Next
As Greece tourism pushes into 2027, the industry must balance rapid growth with sustainability. The 38.3% surge in early 2026 arrivals puts immediate pressure on local infrastructure, particularly on popular islands. Authorities will likely need to invest in off-peak transportation and resource management to accommodate the 35% of travelers targeting the autumn months.
Expect airlines to adjust their schedules, extending seasonal routes deeper into October and November to capture the shoulder season travel demand. The GNTO’s plan to adapt promotional strategies by country will likely see targeted campaigns in high-intent markets like Romania, Italy, and Sweden. If Greece maintains its high safety and infrastructure ratings under increased visitor loads, its position as a leading Mediterranean destination will remain secure.
