Halfway through the calendar year, the United States is already close to matching all of 2025’s confirmed measles cases. That is the clearest signal in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s latest weekly tally—not a single new outbreak headline, but a national count that has compressed years of post-elimination quiet into two consecutive high-burden seasons.
As of July 2, 2026, CDC reported 2,170 confirmed measles cases for 2026 so far. The full-year total for 2025 was 2,289. Put another way: by early July, 2026 had already logged about 95% of last year’s entire confirmed case load. For context on the Health desk, that pace matters more than any one state bulletin.
What the July 2 numbers show
CDC’s measles cases and outbreaks page, updated July 2, 2026, attributes 2,158 of this year’s confirmed cases to 41 U.S. jurisdictions and 12 cases to international visitors. The agency counted 31 new outbreaks in 2026 and said 93% of confirmed cases (2,019 of 2,170) were outbreak-associated—659 from outbreaks that started in 2026 and 1,360 from outbreaks that began in 2025 and continued into this year.
Age and vaccination patterns remain stark. Among 2026 cases to date, CDC lists 442 (20%) under age 5, 1,097 (51%) ages 5–19, and 625 (29%) ages 20 and older. Vaccination status: 93% unvaccinated or unknown, 4% with one MMR dose, and 4% with two doses. Hospitalizations were reported for 6% of 2026 cases (138 of 2,170); CDC listed zero measles deaths in 2026 through the July 2 update, compared with three in 2025.
Weekly rash-onset counts have cooled from winter peaks. CDC’s table shows 296 cases for the week of January 11, 2026, versus 8 for the week of June 28, 2026. That decline does not erase the cumulative burden already on the books.
Where cases concentrate
Jurisdiction totals among U.S. residents (as of July 2) are highly uneven. South Carolina (670) and Utah (514) lead 2026 counts, followed by Texas (182), Virginia (144), Florida (141), Pennsylvania (90), and Arizona (89). Several states that reported large 2025 totals—Texas (803 in 2025) and Arizona (222)—remain elevated but are not alone in driving the national figure.
CDC notes that state websites and its own page update on different schedules, and that this dashboard includes only confirmed cases notified to CDC as of noon on Thursdays—not every probable case jurisdictions may be tracking locally.
Why the two-year surge matters
Measles was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000, meaning sustained domestic transmission had stopped. The recent pattern looks different: 285 confirmed cases in 2024, then 2,289 in 2025, and 2,170 already in 2026 by July 2. Outbreak counts rose from 16 in 2024 to 48 in 2025; 2026 already has 31 new outbreaks on CDC’s cumulative tally.
CDC links higher activity to two structural pressures: kindergarten MMR coverage falling below the 95% community-immunity target (92.5% in the 2024–2025 school year, leaving roughly 286,000 kindergartners at risk by CDC’s estimate), and increased global measles circulation that raises the chance an unvaccinated traveler brings infection home. The agency also stresses that pockets of low coverage can sustain large outbreaks even when statewide averages look adequate.
