The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warns that this event will become “very strong,” peaking near the end of the year. For travelers and the global tourism industry, this means shifting weather windows, unexpected closures, and altered itineraries across the globe.
The Science Behind El Niño Travel Disruptions
El Niño is fueled by exceptionally warm Pacific waters. Subsurface temperatures in some parts of the Pacific during July and early August were more than eight degrees Celsius above normal. The Niño 3.4 index, a closely watched measure of ocean temperatures in the central tropical Pacific, averaged 1.5°C above normal from May through July. By July, it had reached 2°C, and weekly readings from late July through mid-August climbed as high as 2.6 degrees.
This enormous reservoir of warm water creates a hotter baseline for the natural climate cycle, leading to unpredictable weather that can stall flights, close attractions, and reroute cruise ships. Extreme heat also reduces air density, which can force airlines to impose weight restrictions on departing aircraft or delay flights until cooler evening hours. “El Niño is being supersized before our eyes,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in a press release. “The science leaves no room for doubt: the planet is in uncharted waters, and those waters are heating up.”
Global Tourism Faces Uneven Consequences
A very strong El Niño does not mean that every region will experience disasters of the same magnitude. However, from September through November, forecasters expect above-normal temperatures across nearly the entire Earth’s surface. Rainfall patterns are taking on the characteristic signature of El Niño, bringing greater chances of heavy rain and flooding to some vacation spots and severe drought to others.
Overlapping climate forces, such as a positive phase of the Indian Ocean Dipole and an unusually warm tropical Atlantic, make precise regional forecasting difficult. Popular winter sun destinations in the Southern Hemisphere may experience unseasonable flooding, while typically lush tropical resorts face drought conditions that increase wildfire risk. Destinations reliant on dry seasons may face torrential downpours, while regions counting on winter snow may see delayed ski seasons.
“El Niño means ‘little boy’ in Spanish, but it has the potential to deliver a massive blow to communities and economies around the world,” Celeste Saulo, head of WMO, said. “We are already seeing the disruption and devastation caused by droughts and floods, and we expect these impacts to worsen as El Niño intensifies.”
Travel Industry Prepares for Extreme Weather Destinations
The forecast has prompted an unusual response. It is the first time ever the WMO has launched a mobilization of this scale with national weather agencies, seeking to strengthen forecasts and early-warning systems. For the travel sector, this translates to a critical need for flexible booking policies and robust travel insurance coverage. Airlines and cruise operators are already adjusting schedules to account for heightened turbulence, altered storm tracks, and potential flight cancellations.
Travel insurance providers are anticipating a spike in weather-related claims. Industry analysts advise travelers to secure comprehensive coverage that explicitly includes weather disruptions, as standard policies often exclude acts of nature unless they directly halt travel. The WMO forecast effort is intended to help governments and humanitarian organizations prepare for the effects on particularly vulnerable sectors, including agriculture, public health, energy, and water supplies—all of which impact the viability of tourist destinations. “This exceptional El Niño demands exceptional preparedness and response,” Ms. Saulo said.
